Helmet Fit – You will want to make sure you have measured and you are buying the right size, a bad fit is a bad idea. Liner – Is the liner removable and washable? There can be some funky smells coming from helmets. Visor Function – Is the visor easy to operate? How about with gloves on? Helmet Weight – Typically the lighter the helmet the less fatigue it will transfer to you. But you need to make sure it is not only light but durable. Helmets made of fiberglass are very lightweight and fiberglass is a very strong material. Safety – Does it meet SNELL or DOT standards or both? It is best if they meet both. Road Noise – Is it too loud? A loud helmet can give you a headache over time. Especially if you are riding for a long time. Price – Sure price is a factor. Shop where you can save money. Design – How does it look? Proud to wear it on bike night? A helmet you like, is a helmet you will wear. Many people would agree that the most important item for safety, when riding a motorcycle, is the helmet. Your helmet holds your life in it’s hands.

There is an increased number of people riding motorcycles out there. This is not only because of the summer weather, but it is also due to the rising costs of gas. We are paying more and more for gas each week, and a lot of us are getting sick of it. We are sick of pulling dollar after dollar out of our paycheck just to pay for gas. Some people are so sick of it they are going out and buying motorcycles.

The main reason for buying motorcycles now is the cost of gas. Motorcycles have much better gas millage. They also look nice, and are great for summer, but the main thing is the price of gas. Those who are riding motorcycles are worried about gas prices, but are they worried about being seen on the roads?

It is important for us to save money. Many people take this very seriously. People also need to start thinking about saving their lives. There is so much concern over saving money, many of the motorcycle riders out there are not concerned about their safety. I see more and more people out there without helmets every day. This concerns me. Hospital bills are going to cost more than gas prices if you get in an accident.

It is hard for drivers in cars to see those on a motorcycle. It is the Motorcyclists job to make sure they are safe and seen on the roads. It is important to wear gear that will protect you in a crash, but also gear that will help you be seen on the road. A helmet can help make you more visible, and there are jackets and things that can also help.

Drivers of cars need to be cautious of those who are riding motorcycles, but it is not the drivers job to make sure the rider is safe. It is the riders responsibility to make sure they have taken all the steps to protect themselves and their lives. It is important to be safe, and a part of that safety is being seen. DOT Approved Importance

When obtaining a motorcycle helmet it is very important that your helmet is safe for use on the roads. You want to know that you are safe from harm when you are investing in something that could save your life you want to be sure it is something worth the money you spend.

It is not necessary to pay a lot of money when you are buying your helmet, there are just a few things you want to look for. The most important thing you want to make sure of is that the helmet has been DOT tested and approved.

The Department of Transportation has certain regulations that helmets have to meet in order to be street safe. If a helmet is not DOT approved it is not legal to wear on the street when riding your motorcycle.

The DOT performs a straight forward impact test. Using a simulated head placed inside a helmet, testers drop the helmet from a height of ten feet. The head cannot receive more than 400 G-force units on impact. A G-force unit measures the force of gravity exerted against an object in motion.

There are other safety tests out there. One of the best is the Snell approval test. This is a very thorough test on the helmets. When a helmet is both DOT and Snell approved it is safe for use.

Snell cites the following areas as critical in helmet safety:

• Impact management: how well the helmet protects against collisions with large objects
• Helmet positional stability: whether the helmet will be in place, on the head, when it’s needed
• Retention system strength: whether the chin straps are sufficiently strong enough to hold the helmet throughout a head impact; and
• Extent of protection: the area of the head protected by the helmet.

Helmets don’t always have to be both DOT and Snell approved. One or the other is great. To be legal on the roads you have to be DOT approved, but you don’t have to be Snell approved. The Snell approval is just an added bonus when looking for a helmet.
